Some interesting (new) WebAPIs, partly influenced by PhoneGap, are starting to show up on mobile devices, mostly because of Firefox OS.

“The ultimate purpose of PhoneGap is to cease to exist”—The Web Platform is closing the gap a little bit, but we're not there yet.
